Sense And Sensibility
Sense and Sensibility follows the trials of the Dashwood sisters, Elinor (representing Sense, or reason) and Marianne (representing Sensibility, or emotion), after their father's death leaves them suddenly impoverished and vulnerable in the rigid society of early 19th-century England. They are forced to move to a modest cottage, where their romantic lives diverge dramatically.
Elinor, governed by logic and discretion, endures a secret heartbreak when her intended, Edward Ferrars, is discovered to be secretly engaged. Meanwhile, Marianne, driven by intense romantic passion, falls heedlessly for the charming but dishonorable Mr. Willoughby, leading to public devastation when he betrays her for wealth. The novel uses the sisters' contrasting fates and emotional journeys to explore the crucial question of whether decisions should be governed by rational thought or uncontrolled feeling, ultimately demonstrating the necessity of balancing both to achieve happiness.
