Frankenstein
The novel is told through the layered narratives of three narrators, beginning with Arctic explorer Robert Walton. The main story recounts the tragic life of Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant but overly ambitious scientist obsessed with unlocking the secrets of life and death. Victor succeeds in creating a humanoid creature from assembled body parts but, horrified by its grotesque appearance, he immediately abandons it.
The Creature, born innocent but hideous, is rejected by society wherever it goes. Driven by loneliness and despair over its creator's abandonment, the Creature swears vengeance on Victor, destroying everyone he holds dear. The novel tracks the relentless pursuit and moral disintegration of both creator and creation, highlighting the catastrophic consequences of playing God and failing to take responsibility for one's creation.
