The Book Of Lost Things

John Connolly - Personal Name;

Set against the backdrop of World War II and the personal tragedy of wartime London, the story follows David, a twelve-year-old boy deeply traumatized by the death of his mother. He grows resentful and isolated after his father quickly remarries. David seeks refuge in his books, only to begin hearing their whispers.

He is violently transported to a dangerous, magical, and distorted land that is a strange reflection of his own world, populated by warped versions of classic fairy-tale characters (e.g., a twisted Little Red Riding Hood, communist dwarfs). On his quest to find a way home, David must confront monsters and survive a grim journey to locate the mysterious Crooked Man and his book. The novel is a poignant, dark meditation on the power of stories to help us cope with loss and the painful transition from innocence to adulthood.
