Fleshmarket Close
Fleshmarket Close sees Inspector John Rebus reluctantly investigating the discovery of human remains in a narrow, historically charged Edinburgh alleyway known as Fleshmarket Close. The investigation quickly leads him away from the city's past and into its fraught present: the murder victim is tentatively identified as being linked to a local asylum seeker camp and a complicated case involving a young female immigrant.
Rebus's investigation exposes a nexus of local and international problems: political maneuvering and corruption, the grim reality of illegal immigration, and deep-seated racial and ethnic tensions simmering beneath Edinburgh's surface. As Rebus navigates the city's political bureaucracy, organized crime elements, and the hostility faced by displaced communities, he realizes the case is less about solving a single murder and more about exposing the decay and prejudice at the heart of the community.
