The Famished Road

Ben Okri - Personal Name;

The novel is set in a impoverished, post-colonial slum in Nigeria. The story is narrated through the eyes of Azaro, a young boy who is an Abiku—a spirit-child in Yoruba mythology destined to repeatedly die and be reborn, thereby tormenting his parents. Azaro chooses to remain in the world of the living, enduring harsh suffering alongside his mother (Maa) and father (Dad). Azaro possesses the unique ability to perceive the spirit world and the physical world simultaneously. While he resists the persistent lure of the spirits trying to draw him back, the people around him struggle intensely against crippling poverty, brutal political corruption, and deep social injustice. This lengthy novel is a profound exploration of suffering, hope, mythology, and the human endeavor to find freedom and dignity amidst chaos.
