The Confusion
The Confusion is the second volume of The Baroque Cycle, following the interwoven stories of two major characters in the late 17th century. The narrative splits between Daniel Waterhouse, a natural philosopher and mathematician who is navigating the complex scientific and political landscape of the Royal Society before traveling to America and becoming embroiled in larger diplomatic intrigues, and Eliza de la Zeur, a sharp financial expert and noblewoman. After being captured and escaping Barbary pirates, Eliza embarks on an epic, high-stakes journey across Europe and the Mediterranean. Her path involves intense espionage, large-scale financial schemes (including the search for lost Spanish gold), and maneuvering between rival global empires. The novel successfully blends swashbuckling adventure, high-seas piracy, political spying, treasure hunting, and the intellectual birth of modern science during the turbulent Baroque era.
