Soul Mountain
Soul Mountain is a fictionalized autobiography inspired by author Gao Xingjian's journey into the remote, less-developed mountain regions of China in the 1980s, following a mistaken diagnosis of lung cancer.
The narrative is fractured, employing a shifting point of view between the "I" narrator, who is the author searching for spiritual refuge and ancient Chinese wisdom, and the "You" narrator, who appears to be searching for the same mysterious woman.
The physical quest to the Sichuan wilderness (in search of the legendary Lingshan, or Soul Mountain) transforms into a profound spiritual and existential journey into ancient Chinese myths, culture, and history. The book explores the tension between the individual and the state, art and politics, and the boundaries between reality and fiction.
