The Picture Of Durian Gray
The novel follows Dorian Gray, a stunningly beautiful young man in Victorian London who becomes infatuated with his own image. Under the influence of the cynical Lord Henry Wotton, Dorian wishes that a magnificent portrait of himself would bear the burden of age and sin, while his own body remains untouched. The wish is granted, and Dorian plunges into a life of decadent, ruthless hedonism and vice, committing numerous cruelties and even murder. As the years pass, Dorian remains eternally young, while the painting, hidden away in his attic, transforms into a hideous, decaying reflection of his corrupted soul. The novel is a dark, aesthetic critique of Victorian morality and the catastrophic consequences of prioritizing eternal beauty over human decency.
