Our Mutual Friend
Our Mutual Friend is Charles Dickens's final, dark social critique of Victorian London's materialism. The central plot is triggered by a large inheritance, a fortune made from dust heaps (garbage), which is intended for John Harmon. Believed dead, John secretly returns to London, assumes the identity of John Rokesmith, and observes the society, particularly Bella Wilfer, the woman he must marry to claim the money. The narrative intricately weaves together multiple storylines involving characters across all social strata: the corruptible rich, the cynical new-money elite (the Veneerings), and the desperate working-class poor, such as the river scavenger Gaffer Hexam. Through these events, Dickens exposes how greed and social status govern marriage, loyalty, and human identity, culminating in a complex tapestry of deception, love, and moral redemption.
