Persuasion
Persuasion tells the story of Anne Elliot, a quiet, intelligent, and perceptive woman of 27 who is living with profound regret. Eight years earlier, Anne was engaged to Captain Frederick Wentworth, a naval officer, but was persuaded by her arrogant family friend, Lady Russell, to break off the match because Wentworth lacked wealth and social connection.
The novel begins as Anne's vain and financially irresponsible family is forced to lease their estate, Kellynch Hall. By coincidence, the new tenants are related to the now wealthy and successful Captain Wentworth, who re-enters Anne's social circle. Anne and Wentworth are forced into awkward proximity, each believing the other is indifferent. Anne must endure seeing Wentworth court other young women, while she silently contends with the vanity of her family and the subtle advances of her manipulative cousin, Mr. Elliot. The plot is a delicate, witty study of patience and second chances, culminating in one of the most famous and romantic declarations of love in literary history.
