The Life a Banana

PP Wong - Personal Name;

The Life of a Banana is a moving and often humorous coming-of-age story centered on Xing Li, a British-born girl of Chinese descent who is struggling with her identity. She is often labeled a "banana"—yellow on the outside, white on the inside—a term for people who are ethnically Asian but culturally Westernized.

Following the sudden death of her mother, 12-year-old Xing Li and her older brother, Lai Ker, move in with their strict, traditional Grandma in a wealthy part of London. Xing Li must navigate relentless racial bullying at school while struggling to adjust to the severe rules and confusing dynamics of her extended Chinese family. The novel explores the trauma of grief, the deep-seated nature of prejudice, and the central conflict of finding a sense of belonging and identity between two distinct cultures.
